What advice would you give to a small business owner putting together their first SEO plan for their website? What are the most important things to think about?
You’ve got a fab business plan, your website is up and running and you’ve started to see some conversion, but how do you actually attract a constant flow of traffic to your site to create sustainable business growth?
A strong SEO campaign will not just increase the hits to your site, but it will also increase conversion, increasing your business’s revenue.
Keyword Selection
Keywords are the building block of any SEO campaign. It’s so important to do your homework and complete some keyword research. Important things to look at are: average monthly search volumes, keyword difficulty and competitiveness of keywords.
Google Keyword Planner is your new best friend when it comes to keyword research, it allows you to investigate keywords that are very relevant to your business, keywords that your audience are actively searching for, and aren’t too competitive for your budget.
It’s crucial to consider that commercial intent of your chosen keywords – do they meet the needs of your audience? Remember: search engines are always looking for a good user experience.
Content Is King
Once you’ve cherry picked your keywords the next steps would be to create really good, useful and original content.
It doesn’t just stop and picking great keywords and fuelling your site with useful content, the next time is onsite optimisation.
Each keyword should be mapped across to one individual keyword. It should be included within the page’s url, page title, meta description and header tag.
Link Building
Links are a key ranking factor. Think of it as a popularity contest, the more high-quality links you have back to your site, the more popular and trusted your site is. You want to concentrate your efforts on earning quality inbound links.
Build relationships with your suppliers, customers and partners and encourage them to link to your site. Build relationships with business and bloggers and explain to them the advantages of linking to your site.
Focus on earning links from high quality sites by offering something of value to them in exchange for a link. There are many different techniques that allow you to do this, such as:
- Offer a high-quality guest post
- Provide a quote for a story
- Creating a really good and shareable infographic
